Many compare him to Martin Luther King, Gandhi and others. He went through no less persecution and misunderstanding. His role was crucial in bringing the collapse of Communism and he is the founder of the Washington Times and the soccer championship - Peace King Cup as well as dozens of other organizations for peace, most of which are with special status in the United Nations. Dr. Moon also plays a very central role in the peace talks with North Korea and in Israel and Gaza.




This article will try to present one of the most controversial religious leaders of our century. At the same time, he is the most widely recognized and respected, by a wide variety of representatives from all religions and denominations.

Pioneer in the fight for human rights and tenfold congressman, Lecturer Walter Fauntroy notes: "I fully uphold Rev Dr. San Myung Moon, because he invests all of his finances and full potential of his organizations for two main purposes; peace and families."

Senator Larry Preslar added: "My admiration of Dr. Moon and his wife grew enormously. His energy, vision and dedication to the cause of peace are unprecedented in the history of mankind."

If you believe that the quotes were unilaterally selected, it will be far from the truth. It turns out that such assessments of his personality are coming from all over the world. Today, facing the incredible achievements in Rev. Moon's efforts for peace, critics of the past seem rather ridiculous, naive, bigoted and narrow-minded rather than the least serious. Or as Senator of San Francisco, Amos Brown, speak of Moon, "his message of peace threatened those religiously narrow-minded" and they responded with intolerance and viciously fierce criticism:

My life as a Catholic

I was born and raised in a small rural town, in a traditional catholic family. The values of purity, fidelity and filial piety, where the common living values at that time. But in the process of growing up, I realized the contradictions inside of myself and in others.

I went to mass almost every day and received the communion very often. During a long period of my life, I feel Jesus very close. 

When I was about 17 or 18 years old, I was walking on the street with two of my friends, suddenly, I looked to the sky and I read: "The Messiah is on the Earth". That experience, shocking me, but I didn't talked to anybody about this with fear to not to be understood.

None of the priest or nuns that I consulted at that time, gave me a clear answer to my questions about Jesus, God, the Bible etc. Then I started to search by my own in a different christian groups etc. Finally, after years of difficulties and some bad decisions, I found out the Unification Church.

Opening my Heart

To listen the Divine Principle (the teachings of Rev. Moon), was like receiving a fresh waterfall from the sky, it was like a personnel revelation to me. It gave me answer to all the questions that I had have during all my life. I was thinking inside, this is it!! This is what I was searching for...

After listen more and more the content of the lectures, I understood the real suffering course of Jesus, the position of His mother Mary. Now Islamic families have more children and better moral standing on family issues. Especially when it comes to population. In 20 more years Europe will be 50% Muslim and 50% Christian.. Thus, unification has to happen. If we want peaceful future, we have to learn to live in love and harmony.

The Unification Church, the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification was founded by Sun Myung Moon in 1954 in Korea. Moon's church attracted attention in the U.S. when he began establishing churches in the San Francisco Bay Area, including Berkeley. Just 40 years later wee see how great, positive impact they had on our American society.

Members of the religious organization came to be called "Moonies" and were proud of it. They followed Moon's beliefs known as the Divine Principle. It offered revolutionary solutions to historic theological problems dividing Christianity for centuries. Moon's teachings proved to be bringing the most powerful revolution of heart and conscience that no one was able to spark before.

In contrast to the free sex culture, Dr. Moon was marrying members in mass marriages. In a wounded world, racked with divorce and distrust, they devoted to move towards the establishment of culture of God centered healing marriages.

Isn't it admirable that followers of Rev. Moon believe, each and every child should be loved by true and loving parents; that every home should be filled with peace, love and harmony. But beyond that, they believe the world should also become "One United Family" under God as our Parent. They believe that for True Love there is no barriers; religious, national, racial or cultural. Love can resolve all human problems and this love should start through Revolution of Heart and Love within the family.

It is only natural that according to the organization, "Reverend and Mrs. Moon have succeeded in becoming the first True Parents, having established a God-centered family and lineage."

"Who can comprehend the sorrowful, painful heart of God?", asks Rev. Moon. "From the Fall God lost His lineage, lost His children, and was forced to hand over the ownership of the nations and world to Satan." History was dominated by selfishness, free sex and distrust that didn't live space for God's presence in our relationships.

According to Sun Myung Moon the wedding ceremony should "alleviate God’s grief caused by the fall of Adam and Eve". When couples of enemy nations, enemy races and enemy religions join in love, history of resentment and pain will be resolved once and forever. The future generations will not carry the barriers from the past in their hearts.

The Unification Church quickly came under fire for its anti-communist work. The founder of the Unification Church, Dr. Sun Myung Moon is known for his key role in the fall of Communism. "If Rev. Moon had not established the Washington Times in 1982, many more problems would have occurred in the Western world", testifies Mr. Oyamada.

With the publication of the Washington Times a new confrontation began in the United States. All the criminal and violent activities of the communists which had been covered up by the liberal press began to be investigated and exposed. Thus, Moon's paper, the Washington Times, played the key role in ending Communism.

Christianity however was confused, disunited and quickly coming under the manipulations of the atheistic communist agendas. Communist countries were even allowed by the west to infiltrate the United Nations. The World Council of Churches became an instrument of the communist propaganda. Rev. Moon was in fact the only hope for saving this confused world.

As could be well expected, the church of Rev. Moon came soon under vicious attacks. The "Moonies" were so falsely accused and bombarded by manipulated negativity, that hundreds of former members were actually put under high-pressure brainwashing by the so called "Anti-cult" fanatics. Of course majority did not succumb to this pressure, so "Anti-cult" activists used drugs and torture. They kept members under long confinement in the desperate attempt to brainwash them against the church. But only in few cases they succeeded and surely their evil will not stay unpunished. Once this was discovered court decision stopped their evil practices.

Anti-Cult fanatics spread the accusations of "sect's secret teachings", "members' brainwashing". The truth was that they used brainwashing techniques to create ex-Moonies. Their evil purpose was to spread the argument that the Unification Church is, in fact, a cult group. The Unification Church at the same time was investing all its energy to save the world from the growing Communist threat.

If one has sincere heart and wants to know the true facts, next time you see the billboards set up at the entrance to campus advertised seminars and evening programs by members of the Family Federation, stop and hear them. "We create community networks of couples committed to each other," a flyer read. "The Family Federation calls all couples to rededicate their marriage in the love of God."

Towards the end of his recent book, Civilization, the historian Niall Ferguson drops into his analysis an explosive depth charge. He quotes a member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, part of a team tasked with the challenge of discovering why it was that Europe, having lagged behind China until the 17th century, overtook it, rising to prominence and dominance.

At first, he said, we thought it was your guns. You had better weapons than we did. Then we delved deeper and thought it was your political system. Then we searched deeper still, and concluded that it was your economic system. But for the past 20 years we have realized that it was in fact your religion, Christianity. It was the Christian foundation of social and cultural life in Europe that made possible the emergence first of capitalism, then of democratic politics.

Equally arrestingly, Ferguson repeats the point made by the editor and Washington correspondent of The Economist, John Micklethwait, and Adrian Wooldridge two years ago in their book God is Back. While Christianity is in decline in Britain and most of Europe, it is growing and thriving in China, where the number of people in church on Sunday is greater than the total membership of the Communist Party — and this in the land that in 1958 Chairman Mao had declared “religion-free”.

The churchgoers are not, as Karl Marx would have predicted, the poor and oppressed searching for the opium of the people. They are the young, hard-working, upwardly mobile entrepreneurs for whom Christianity offers an ethical framework, a structured view of life and its disciplines, in a society experiencing rapid transition.

As a non-Christian, I find this fascinating. Europe is losing the very thing that once made it great, while China, the world’s fastest-growing economy, is discovering it. China: the home of Confucianism, Taoism and its own brand of communism. That is something no one could have foreseen.

What has China realized that the West is rapidly forgetting? That a civilization is as strong as its faith. As a culture grows old and tired, as people borrow more and save less, as they value present pleasures over future growth, so they begin to lose the beliefs and practices that made their society successful in the first place.

It begins to resemble the Roman Empire at the start of its decline. The Roman historian Livy wrote, with great poignancy, about how “with the gradual relaxation of discipline, morals first subsided, as it were, then sank lower and lower, and finally began the downward plunge which has brought us to our present time, when we can endure neither our vices nor their cure”.

A half-century ago, Will Durant in The Story of Civilization argued that the decline of a civilization was the culmination of strife between religion and secular intellectualism, which ended by weakening the institutions of convention and morality. “In the end a society and its religion tend to fall together, like body and soul, in a harmonious death.”

The decline and fall of civilizations has been charted by the wise for many centuries. They include the sages of Ancient Egypt, the prophets of Ancient Israel, the great 14th-century Islamic thinker Ibn Khaldun, and the far-seeing 18th-century Italian philosopher and historian Giambattista Vico.

They all offer essentially the same analysis. Civilisations begin by valuing austerity, courage and self-sacrifice. These set them on a path to growth. As they become successful, they grow more self-indulgent and self-centered. People are no longer willing to make sacrifices for the group. Trust declines. Social capital wanes. There are no heroes any more. Renown gives way to fame and then to mere celebrity. That, Ferguson implies, is the precipice that we are approaching in the West.

Societies start growing old when they lose faith in the transcendent. They then lose faith in an objective moral order and end by losing faith in themselves. But there is an alternative. The West can rediscover what Jeremiah called “the devotion of your youth”.

Judaism and Christianity share an astonishing capacity for self-renewal. That is what happened in Judaism after every tragedy from the Babylonian exile to the Holocaust. That is what is happening now to Christianity in many parts of the world, and it can happen here too.

We are as strong as our faith. That truth, once the West’s unique selling proposition, now comes with a label saying, “Made in China”. But it’s still worth buying.

I have never heard of a religious leader like him in our time. You can see and feel how much he loves God and Jesus through his speeches and the vast range of activities for peace he initiated.

Three generations of Moons family together were passing the torch of peacemaking in the Old Continent. On the photo, Rev. and Mrs. Moon, together with their son, Hyung Jin Moon and Yeon Ah Moon. Their tour included 7 nations in Europe and 1 nation in the Middle East.

Rev. Moon had a vision of Jesus Christ, in 1935. Jesus ordered him to fulfill the unfinished task of establishing God’s kingdom on earth. Despite the fierce attacks, the Korean born Sun Myung Moon, could win recognition from political leaders in Washington and around the globe. His work and teaching had enormous impact on shaping our century.

Founding President, James Mancham, Seychelles (1976-77), wrote: "Father Moon has created a global alliance of religious, academic, political, civic and business leaders to work together to promote global peace and create what he calls a unified world in which people live together in harmony, cooperation and co-prosperity."

Throughout the years numerous, of so called 'experts', have predicted his demise and decline. Yet Rev. Moon's organizations and foundation grew to an unprecedented world level in less than 50 years.

Some say that the ranks of the church's U.S. followers have thinned, but in fact today their children are more than the parents. In recent articles 'The New Moons: The Second Generation' where described as bringing a new life in the Organization's work.

Worldwide, the core members of the church may be about 200,000 or 300,000, but with the associates of their Peace organizations, membership figures go way over hundred millions. Those who received the Marriage Blessing around the world are close to 400 million families. They might not be core members of Rev. Moon's organizations, but they are inspired by the main vision for "World Peace through Ideal Families".

“To us, the messiah is the one who re-creates the original ideal on earth, which is passing on the tradition of loving families,” said Mr. Schanker, main spokesman of the Church. “The kids will take the traditions and values to a new level.”, he continued.

The Rev. Sun Myung Moon, founder of the Unification Church, has turned over day-to-day control of the church and financial empire he founded to a daughter and three sons. It numbers hundreds of organizations dedicated to peace, encompassing all areas of life.

Even Moon's former enemies now recognize and celebrate the value of his "global vision" for peace. Here is what an Anglican Priest, Senior Lecturer in Religious Studies, Rev. David A. Hart wrote:

"Thank you, Rev. Moon, for your life of self-sacrifice and vision. In some sense, even we who are outside your membership as Ambassadors for Peace can salute you also as our "True Father," for you have contributed to the global vision of the earlier messiahs, and we salute your noble path and commit ourselves to follow in the future!" Rev. And he is only one of hundreds of thousands of priests and religious scholars who share that admiration of Rev. Moon's work and teachings.

Hyung Jin Moon, one of several offspring who have roles in the religious movement, is now president of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, which entered the United States in the late 1950s. Hyung Jin is the seventh and youngest son of Rev. Moon.

Elder brothers Kook Jin Moon, 39, is in charge of business ventures in South Korea, while Hyun Jin “Preston” Moon, 40, is chairman of News World Communications, the parent company of The Washington Times, United Press International and other media properties. In addition, he leads The Washington Times Foundation.

Rev. Moon’s second daughter, In Jin Moon, 44, is in charge of the U.S. church.

The church has expanded its operations far beyond the religious sphere to hundreds of ventures, in more than a half-dozen countries, ranging from hospitals to universities.

A list assembled by the Associated Press includes a ballet company, a professional soccer team, the New Yorker Hotel near Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, a South Korean ad agency and ski resort, and a seafood distribution firm that supplies sushi to Japanese restaurants in the United States.

Rev. Moon became the "Champion of Inter-religious reconciliation" by one simple method, that no one used in the past. He simply brought representatives from all faith to work heart to heart for a common cause. Rev. God is our Dad; He is our Parent. God created us because of love. We can perceive his nature and heart in everything he created. Find out, what was his Original Ideal; and what was to be if we did not fall.



Throughout history, people have anguished over the fundamental questions of human life and the universe without arriving at satisfying answers. This is because no one has understood the root principle by which humanity and the universe were originally created. To approach this topic properly, it is not enough to examine resultant reality. The fundamental question is that of the causal reality. Problems concerning human life and the universe cannot be solved without first understanding the nature of God. This chapter deals extensively with these questions.

How can we know the divine nature of the invisible God?

One way to fathom His deity is by observing the universe which He created. Thus, St. Paul said:

Ever since the creation of the world his invisible nature, namely, his eternal power and deity, has been clearly perceived in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. -Rom. 1:20

Just as a work of art displays the invisible nature of its maker in a concrete form, everything in the created universe is a substantial manifestation of some quality of the Creator's invisible, divine nature. As such, each stands in a relationship to God. What if Adam and Eve did not fall?

Had Adam, the first human ancestor, reached perfection, he would have embodied all the subject elements in the things of creation. Had Eve attained perfection, she would have embodied all the object elements in the things of creation. God created Adam and Eve to have dominion over the natural world. Growing together toward perfection, Adam was to become the king of all the subject elements in creation and Eve was to become the queen of all the object elements. If they had then become one as husband and wife, they would have become the center that could rule the entire universe consisting of subject partners and object partners.

Human beings are created to be the center of harmony of the whole cosmos. If Adam and Eve had attained perfection and united as husband and wife, it would have meant the joining into oneness of the two centers of the dual characteristics of all beings. Had Adam and Eve moved together in harmony and attained oneness, the whole cosmos with its dual characteristics would have danced in harmony. The place where Adam and Eve become perfectly one in heart and body as husband and wife is also the place where God, the subject partner giving love, and human beings, the object partners returning beauty, become united. This is the center of goodness where the purpose of creation is fulfilled. Here God, our Parent, draws near and abides within His perfected children and rests peacefully for eternity. This center of goodness is the object partner to God's eternal love, where God can be stimulated with joy for eternity. This is the place where the Word of God is incarnated and brought to fulfillment. It is the center of truth and the center of the original mind which guides us to pursue the purpose of creation.

What is the perfect saved individual?

In order for an individual to perfect his character, he must unite his mind and body through give and take action with God as their center. Such individuals become the temples of God,^{15(I Cor. 3:16)} achieve complete oneness with Him,^{16(John 14:20)} and acquire a divine nature. They experience the Heart of God as if it were their own. Hence, they understand His Will and live fully attuned to it. When a person abides in the state of individual perfection, he lives as the substantial object partner to his mind. Because the center of his mind is God, he also lives as the substantial object partner to God. Both the mind and God rejoice as they experience their internal nature and external form through the stimulation which their object partners give them. Accordingly, when people realize God's first blessing, they become God's beloved who inspire Him with joy. Sharing all the feelings of God as their own, they would never commit any sinful acts that would cause God grief. This means they would never fall.

Who decides our place in the Spirit World?

It is not God who decides whether a person's spirit enters heaven or hell upon his death; it is decided by the spirit himself. Humans are created so that once they reach perfection they will fully breathe the love of God. Those who committed sinful deeds while on earth become crippled spirits who are incapable of fully breathing in the love of God. They find it agonizing to stand before God, the center of true love.
